European Research and Innovation Days is the European Commission’s annual flagship Research and Innovation event, bringing together policymakers, researchers, entrepreneurs and the public to debate and shape the future of research and innovation in Europe and beyond. This year, it is a fully virtual event, with the Policy conference and the Science is Wonderful! online exhibition.

By creating connections between cutting-edge scientific research and the most pressing challenges of a generation, the European Research and Innovation Days represent a unique opportunity to join the conversation and enact real change. From tackling the climate crisis to building a digital world that works for everyone, we’ll delve into the questions that shape who we are and the future we want to live in: it’s time to get involved!

The event is all about collaboration: bringing together individuals and experts from all areas to build connections and ignite a brighter future.

There are literally hundreds of EU and G20 funding incentives that don't quite make the grade in terms of garnering interest, that would otherwise be directed to more immediately commercial applications.

The EU's Green Deal is one of the more attention getting, in terms of research, that could change the climate warming landscape, for some already in the fold.

The Clean Queen of the Seas, Elizabeth Swann

INHIBITING CURRENT RULES : The Elizabeth Swann is shown above is a zero emissions vessel, using only solar and wind power for propulsion, but under current EU point scoring, she'd have little chance of securing funding. This is why we are inviting other forms of collaboration, including corporate branding opportunity.

The European Commission’s Directorate General for Research and Innovation, the Research Executive Agency, the Executive Agency for SMEs, and the Innovation and Networks Executive Agency, invite you to participate in the Info Day on the European Green deal Call, published on 18 September on the Funding & Tenders Opportunities Portal.

This is a FREE two-day virtual event that will introduce the Green Deal call for proposals and present insights and expectations from the European Commission, while offering a unique international networking and matchmaking experience to forge winning research and innovation consortia.

The programme will include presentations from the European Commission in all areas of the Green Deal call, and will provide a unique opportunity for applicants to pitch their ideas and expertise to leading research organisations, academia, SMEs and cutting-edge innovators from across industries.

The virtual brokerage event will allow you to extend your international network and create strategic partnerships through scheduled one-to-one meetings.

The event is open to SMEs, larger companies and research organisations in the European Union, and in Associated and third countries.

The Info Day will take place during the virtual Research & Innovation Days (22-24/9/2020). Once the matchmaking will have taken place, participants will have the possibility to still arrange meetings for 1 month after the event.

Divided into ambitious plenary sessions spanning the depth and breadth of research and innovation in Europe, and specialised hubs covering 10 pivotal themes, it brings cutting-edge scientific research to concrete global problems.

Each hub will have a virtual front desk providing information on hub-specific topics, breakout rooms for dedicated discussions and meetings and a virtual meeting room for policy sessions.

Nelson Kay is a volunteer with the Cleaner Ocean Foundation

Our special projects manager (volunteer) attended this event, taking 3 meetings and 3 more after-event online chats - where double booking and limited slots were available for the delegates. You can contact the Foundation via Briggette Dusart or any of the Elizabeth Swann development team. While present calls are to 'general' to consider applying, vague even, the Foundation are consortium building (networking) looking for development partners for when funding from whatever source is on the table.

GREEN DEAL - HUB 2: The European Green Deal

How can research and innovation drive fair and just transitions in Europe

Climate change, biodiversity loss, and damage to our soils, oceans and waterways pose a threat to our very existence. Sessions will look at how research and innovation can drive the urgent change we and our planet need.

The Green Deal is a once in a lifetime chance to transform Europe into a green and sustainable economy. It’s also a commitment to make these transitions fair and to leave no-one behind. Research and innovation will help accelerate this huge shift to a circular economy.

Sessions in this hub will provide an opportunity to imagine a better future together and cover areas where we can deliver long-term and far-reaching changes in energy, green mobility, food standards, air and water quality, and human health such as:

- sustainable agriculture
- carbon-neutral buildings
- clean energy transition
- energy efficient transport
- smart cities
- climate-resilient communities

Day 2 will feature an info day on the upcoming Horizon 2020 Green Deal call for proposals, followed by breakout sessions per area.

Day 3 will include a brokerage event and matchmaking session where partnerships can be made.

Research and innovation driving transformative change

Becoming the world’s first climate-neutral continent by 2050 is a once in a lifetime opportunity to modernise the EU’s economy and society and re-orient them towards a just and sustainable future.

Research and innovation will play a central role in

- accelerating and navigating the necessary transitions
- deploying, demonstrating and de-risking solutions
- engaging citizens in social innovation

Funding

The Commission is making available €1 billion under the Green Deal call - the last and biggest call under Horizon 2020. The call is designed to respond to the climate crisis, provide more protection to Europe’s biodiversity and habitats under threat, and accelerate a sustainable recovery.

A call info day and brokerage event will take place at the virtual European Research and Innovation Days on 23-24 September 2020.

HORIZON EUROPE

Horizon Europe is the EU's €100 billion euro research and innovation programme starting in 2021, 35% of which is allocated to achieving climate objectives.
