PlanetSolar heading out into uncharted technical waters. The theory was in place, but nobody knew if this solar powered boat could make it. But they did! The solar panel area on this ship was increased with solar panels on rollers, pulled out by the crew using winches. The Elizabeth Swann uses robotics and hydraulics to move solar wings that automatically track the sun, and fold away in storm conditions.

WP6. SHAKEDOWN TRIALS IN THE ENGLISH CHANNEL

Launch of the test-bed platform (vessel) to include shakedown trials in the English Channel, including testing of:

1. Navigation equipment and AI (Captain Nemo)

2. Energy harvesting apparatus and AI (Hal) robotics

3. Propulsion system, steering, maneuvering

4. Geospatial data acquisition system

5. Autonomous docking system

6. Vessel security and media interactivity

Following successful trials, a shakedown cruise at high speed across the English Channel will give the Crew a chance to experience the performance of the Elizabeth Swann.

CROSS CHANNEL BASH - Newhaven to Dieppe is a distance of approximately 125 kilometers, ideal for setting a record between GPS points of 100km. A shorter run from Dover to Calais might not give the Swann a chance to show her mettle, though it may be an interesting comparison to Bleriot's achievement. We are considering other routes, some designed to offer good media coverage of events - crucially to interest enabling funding partners.

The Cleaner Ocean Foundation works to help protect the "seven seas" from the effects of anthropogenic atmospheric pollution like this ship that is belching diesel fumes like there is no tomorrow. We'd like to preserve tomorrow for our children. You can help us to make this scene a thing of the past.

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?

Because we can, and because we can, we must.
